One of the most well known inventors of modern history is Thomas Edison, whose name is linked to more than 1,000 different patents. However there are many not so well known inventors out there whose inventions we know and use almost every day. Some may say even take for granted. To this day no one knows the exact origins of arguably the most important invention in all of human civilization, the wheel, but we all know what it is and use it almost on a daily basis.
The following list contains 13 not so well known inventors and their inventions:
1 – Ruth Handler (1916-2002) – Handler originally invented the Barbie Doll in 1959 for her daughter Barbara.
2 – The Reverend Sylvester Graham (1794-1851) – Graham was an American dietary reformer and the inventor of the graham cracker.
3 – William (Bill) Powell Lear (1902-1978) – Lear, known for founding the Lear Jet Corporation, was also the inventor of the first car radio and developed the 8-track tape.
4 – Erno Rubik (1944- ) – It may come as no surprise that in 1974 Rubik invented the 3-D mechanical puzzle called the Rubik’s Cube.
5 – Percy LeBaron Spencer (1894-1970) – In 1945, while standing in front of an operating magnetron, a chocolate bar in Spencer’s pocket melted, which resulted in him coming up with the idea to invent the microwave oven.
6 – Walter Hunt (1796-1859) – Hunt was a New York mechanic that invented the sewing machine in 1833 and the safety pin in 1849. I’m sure his wife would have been happier if he invented tear proof trousers instead.
7 – John A. Miller (1872-1941) – Miller designed over 60 roller coasters and held over 100 patents, many of which were for roller coaster safety devices that are still used today.
8 – Marion Donovan (1917-1998) – Donovan is credited with inventing the first waterproof disposable diaper.
9 – Ralph Wilford Samuelson (1904-1977) – In 1922 when Samuelson was just eighteen years of age he proposed the idea that if you could ski on snow, then you could ski on water and invented water-skiing.
10 – Arthur Wynne (1862-1945) – Editor and puzzle constructor Arthur Wynne invented the crossword puzzle in 1913 any people all over the world now have something to occupy themselves with on Sunday mornings.
11 – Clayton Jacobson II (1932- ) – Jacobson was a dirt bike enthusiast that wanted to translate his hobby to water and is credited with inventing the very first Jet Ski.
12 – Edward Binney & Harold Smith – In 1885 Edward Binney and Harold Smith founded their company Binney & Smith. The company would later become known as Crayola, and they were the inventors of the Crayola Crayon.
13 – Luther George Simjian (1905-1997) – Simjian is an inventor of numerous devices and holds of over 200 patents. His most invention is the ATM, or automatic teller machine. He was not responsible for inventing convenience fees however.
