Hundreds of Savings with Used PS3 Games

Hundreds of Savings with Used PS3 Games

One of the biggest complaints with the current gen systems (PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii) are that their games all cost too much at launch. The old standard price for new games was $50, as it remains on the PC, but new games are mostly $60 and sometimes even $70 on the three big consoles. One of the best ways to save money and still enjoy the very best games is to wait for other people to try the games. You can then purchase used PS3 games for a fraction of the price that you’d need to pay new. Used PS3 games aren’t worse off than new discs so long as they aren’t all scratched up, so just judge the quality of the disc before making a purchase, and you can save hundreds of dollars a year.

A Looming Threat

Some game developers are tired of people buying used PS3 games, so they are thinking about offering incentives to players who buy the games new and taking away from those that buy used. For example, one of the suggested courses of action would be to offer game keys with each new copy that could only be activated once. Such a game key would unlock a large portion of the end game, while lacking that game key would prevent players from progressing to the end of the game. Talk about a bummer indeed. However, such measures would seriously harm the business that companies like Gamestop enjoy, which relies on used PS3 games and used titles from other consoles to make most of their profits.

However, such measures aren’t even past the speculation stage at this point, and for the time being, you can still save hundred of dollars a year simply by purchasing used PS3 games instead of new. Most of the time, you can even get the original packaging with those games, which is important to many collectors. Simply do the math to see how much you could save. If you bought Assassin’s Creed when it first came out, it would have run you back $60. If you bought Assassin’s Creed today used, it would only cost you $20. If we take a median savings of $30 from buying used, you could save $300 if you buy ten games a year, which seems to be a fairly typical number among gamers.

Used PS3 games are in tip top shape, and if you notice any irregularities or scratches, simply say you want a better disc. However, very slight scratches can be buffed off, and besides that, most scratches don’t interfere with how the game discs are read by the console. After all, they have a protective layer, which is where most scratches are stopped, over the layers used to store data. You can even use your savings from purchasing used PS3 games to buy even more games!
