Importance of electrical courses highlighted by train error
The train breakdown on the new £370 million Airdrie-Bathgate route has underlined the importance of electrical courses.
Shortly after transport minister Stewart Stevenson arrived to officially open the new Bathgate station, the train broke down, compromising services and disrupting travel routes, reports the Scotsman.
The problem was caused by an electric test train used to check the new overhead wires on the route, which blocked one of the tracks after tripping the electrical system and in turn switched off the power.
A spokesman for Network Rail confirmed that services on the Bathgate branch line were disrupted by a power failure at Livingston North.
Passengers who had started using the station just hours before had to be transferred to alternative bus transportation.
A ScotRail spokeswoman told the Scotsman: “We organised buses to run in both directions. We would like to apologise to customers whose journeys were disrupted this morning.”
The Airdrie-Bathgate Rail Link was given Royal Assent in May 2007 and has a target line speed of 80 miles per hour.
