Travel Insurance Information
Travel Insurance Information
Are you going on vacation or holiday in the near future? If you are planning on going away from where you live for any extended amount of time, you should purchase travel insurance. Here is some information on travel insurance to help you make your decision.
What It Is
Travel insurance is an insurance coverage you can purchase that will cover medical emergencies worldwide. In many cases, you can purchase this insurance for a short vacation or for business travels. What this does is ensure that you will be able to get competent health care in a quick fashion no matter where you are in the world. Many travel insurance packages will include round the clock toll-free emergency assistance via telephone, medical evacuation from an area that does not offer sufficient medical care for your medical emergency, and possibly some accidental death and dismemberment coverage should you choose to purchase it.
What It Is Not
It is important to know that travel insurance is not health insurance. In many cases, travel insurance falls under an employer’s worker’s compensation program if you are using it for business travel. It is important to have regular health insurance as well as travel insurance when you are leaving the country to ensure proper care should an emergency arise.
Why You Need It
You might not think that you need travel insurance. First, check with your insurance company. Do they cover out of country visits? Many insurances have a set rate for if you see a doctor within their network and a set rate for if you see a doctor out of the network. Chances are if you are seeing a doctor out of the country it is for a true emergency, and true emergencies can be very expensive. So even if your insurance is paying 80% of the bill out of network, you will still be left to pay 20% on thousands of dollars of medical bills.
In addition, it is important to check if your insurance even offers out of country coverage as many do not. Travelers insurance will grant you that coverage as well as provide additional services that your insurance will not. If you are, for example, hiking in the Amazon, your insurance will probably not pay to have you evacuated if you are bit by a poisonous snake. However, if you purchase travel insurance, you will be covered in that exact scenario.
Paying the additional fees for travel insurance could save you thousands of dollars in the long run and it is something that you should definitely think about doing.
