What would you do if you saw a flashing light warning?

A flashing light warning signifies one thing, a problem or danger. If you see any light warning you would do well to heed what it is trying to tell you. In our homes we would have alarm systems that flash a light warning if we have an intruder, we would also have an audible alarm sound.

Flashing light warning is crucial in our lives as they give us advance knowledge of a problem, hazard or imminent danger. Police, fire and medical vehicles all have light warning of some kind, as they need to warn and inform the public at large. One thing is certain regardless of where or when you see a light warning you need to act immediately to ensure yours and other safety. A warning light gives us time to react and get to a safe speed on the highway or to pull over if instructed by a police officer. We should never ignore a light warning at any time.

Action you would normally take if you see a light warning flashing up ahead on the highway is move to an adjacent lane and drop speed. Some states specify in their Move Over law that on sight of any flashing lights on the highway you must drop your speed to at least 20mph below the posted speed limit. The Move Over laws are state specific so you would do well to check out what is required in your area. Ignorance of the law will give you no protection if you are stopped. You will have a hefty fine and points on your license, and that is not a risk worth taking.

A flashing light warning normally means either stationary vehicles ahead or an emergency vehicle needs to pass you. Always be aware and alert whilst driving for any kind of light warning, the first responders need to be at scenes quickly and safely and we can all do our bit to ensure that happens. Sadly many of us will at some point in our lives need the assistance of a first responder whether it be police, fire or medical and we need to know they can get to us at the earliest opportunity and safely.

Don’t be a driving dummy. Keep alert to any hazards on the road and that includes any light warning you see. There are way too many accidents on our roads and highways and many of them are due to nothing more than carelessness whilst driving. By paying attention to all that is happening around you, you can avoid becoming a statistic yourself or needing the help of an emergency response team. If we ever do need the assistance of police, fire or ambulance we will want them to get to us as quickly as possible, and that means light warning and siren in most cases.

There really is no standard Move Over law so please make sure you check out what’s required of you in the event you see any light warning on the highway. First responders are required to warn of hazard and inform of incidents and accidents so pay heed to the light warning you see. Ensure you drive with minimum distraction and above all else don’t get into your vehicle if you have had or are impaired in any way. Far too many people are killed including first responders each year and we need to do all we can to keep those fatalities down.
