Selecting a Proper Home for your Dog
Dog owners must really think about good dog houses so that the dog has a nice place where he can spend the night and just laze around. You can do this either by buying a ready-made one or make one by yourself. Before starting to build one, however, do make sure to see that you have a plan as well as the materials required. The materials should be sturdy ones and should not be harmful to your dog.
Your dogs too need the correct size of houses where they can eat and sleep and be protected from weather fluctuations. The size of the dog house is important and can be decided basically by the height of your dog but some also consider the weight to determine the size of dog houses. Some dogs such as Pincers, Greyhounds and Doberman are tall structured and hence height requirements must be considered.
The size of dog houses should be such that the dog can enter, lie down or turn about with ease. Some may think that bigger dog houses are the ideal ones. But this does not always prove to be advantageous. If the weather gets very cold, then the body heat of the dog gets unnecessarily wasted in case of a large dog house, whereas a compact one would keep him warmer. But if the winters in your place are not that severe, then a larger one would make no difference.
Regarding the height of doors in dog houses, it should be at least three fourths of the height of the dog measured up to his shoulder. This means that for a dog of 19″ a door size of 15″ would suffice. You don’t need to cater to the full height of the dog, as they are capable of ducking while entering. As for the width and length, try to keep dog houses square as far as possible.
However, if you want, you can make the nose longer than the flank by about 25%. For a dog who has a length of 24″, the ideal size of the dog house would be a length of about 1 1/4 of this, which is 30″. Make sure that you don’t make the mistake of buying dog houses with lengths less than the length of your dog. When choosing the height, it can exceed the dog’s height by 50%. For a dog that is 22″ this can be up to 33″.
