A History The history of Auguste Reymond SA dates back to 1898 in the small village of Tramelan, Switzerland. Auguste Reymond’s passion for horology inspired his dream of manufacturing wristwatches. Reymond, who was only 27 years old at the time, set out to pursue his dream. He rented a small space and hired a few watchmakers to begin manufacturing watches that would bear the Auguste Reymond name. With his goals in sight, Reymond began a highly respected watch manufacture that is still prominent in the market today.

In 1906, Manufacture Auguste Reymond also began to manufacture movement blanks or ebauches. By 1910, Reymond’s idea had transformed into a thriving business. The small space turned into a large factory employing more than a hundred people. Auguste had been nicknamed a “watch baron” in the Jura region at that time, quite an accomplishment for such a young man at the helm of such a young company. The movements produced by Manufacture A. Reymond were quickly in demand by other watch manufacturers in the area because of the superior quality and competitive pricing of the movements. Soon A.Reymond began to produce them for other manufacturers as well as his own. The Auguste Reymond movements became world-renowned under the brand name unitas, named after the unitas Watch Company he acquired in 1926.

During the late 1920s and early’30s the Swiss watch industry was feeling the impact of the Great Depression. Watch sales plummeted and Reymond was forced to sell his company to a group of investors who kept the company above water.

Through the 1950s the artisans at A. Reymond continued to design timepieces like no other, such as a jumping hours model as well as braille watches for the blind. Auguste Reymond still remains the unchallenged specialist for tactile braille watches that are distributed under the arsa brand name of Auguste Reymond.

With the arrival of inexpensive yet highly accurate quartz movements in the late ’70s and early’80s, sales of mechanical wrist watches began to plunge while the sales of quartz movements soared. The new technological revolution was the demise of many watch manufactures in Switzerland. Auguste Reymond SA had to be liquidated and all of its assets sold off. Fortunately, a former manager of the company was able to purchase much of the Manufacture Auguste Reymond parts, movements, tools and equipment, with the hope of keeping the Auguste Reymond name and tradition alive.
