Ideas for a Teenage Boy’s Room
So you’re thinking about decorating a bedroom for a teenage boy?
This can be a difficult task, so make sure you take a few things into consideration first.
During their teenage years, your offspring will be craving independence and longing for a sense of freedom – so asking for their say in how their room will be decorated will always be appreciated. Present them with some of your own ideas and ask for their input, so that they can have a bedroom that is unique to them and their needs.
Take into account the current decor in his room and make sure that you choose something very different to account for your boy’s growing and changing tastes. Perhaps add some neutrality to the room with muted tones, or go the opposite way and pick some deep shades of his favourite colours to give a really bold look. Either way, it’s important that he feels that his room is growing and changing as he does, and he is no longer in a bedroom that was designed for someone much younger.
At this stage of his life, he’s bound to be facing a lot of homework, so it’s crucial that he has his own space to work in. Consider getting a corner desk and an adjustable reading lamp so that he has a large, clear area to lay his work out on.
Storage is important, too, but many boys of this age will be strongly against any kind of enforced organisation. So instead make sure there is enough space to store all of his belongings and schoolwork without deciding yourself exactly where everything ‘should’ go – he’ll be much more likely to keep the place tidy if he has the freedom to decide on his own organisational system.
If he’s always got friends around and there’s enough space in his room, consider introducing a long sofa to the mix. That way when they come to visit, there are places for them to sit and relax. It can also act as a spare bed if they end up staying over.
As your boy gets older, he may want his room to have more of a sense of function and purpose – so moving the bed to a central place can be a god way to achieve this, allowing walkways either side. His bedroom will feel more centred around its main purpose.
If he’s got a television and/or a gaming system, it can be a good idea to organise the seating around it. Position the suite on one side of the room facing the television, on a separate plain to the bed.
This can be a good way of splitting the room up a bit too, and allowing for a separate area for entertainment, as watching television can make it difficult to sleep afterwards – so by keeping these two functions of the room separate the room will be more functional for both rest and play.
So, now you’ve got some ideas, why not start hunting for the perfect furniture? Remember, a large desk, sofa and adequate storage are key.
