Why Soccer Speed Training is Important
As a game, soccer has always been and will be about speed. But this critical part of soccer training is often excluded from soccer training manuals. For sure, aerobic and anaerobic exercises are are mandatory but the goal of this article is to show why soccer speed training is extremely important.
The most important factors that influence speed on the field are reflexes, anticipation and agility. Therefore, when it comes to soccer speed training, there are a minimum of four elements to consider: mental ; acceleration; maximum velocity; and endurance development.
Soccer Speed Training – Mental Aspects:The fact of the matter is that whatever a soccer player does on the field -consciously or sub-consciously – he must think it first. So a player will be more effective on the field if he is able to think faster.
Soccer Speed Training and Acceleration: Even though a lot of emphasis is placed on sprinting in soccer, usually a player will not sprint for more than 20 metres at a time. What he will do more is a change of direction and change of speed. And so coaches must concentrate on this aspect of speed training.
Soccer Speed Training and Maximum Velocity: It’s important that players are taught (preferably at an early age) how to run full speed. And they will surely benefit from having this skill!
Soccer Speed Endurance: In developing speed endurance you must take into account that a fatigued mind is also a factor- in addition to a tired body. Therefore it’s crucial to train players for endurance in both the body and the mind. I cannot stress this point too much!
Despite the fact that there are many aspects to soccer training, soccer speed is a player’s biggest asset and so soccer speed training is essential for footballers to compete at the highest levels.
