Jobs of a Veterinary Technician

A veterinary technician that usually graduates from veterinary assistant schools is also called veterinary technologist or an animal health technician. Their job is to merely assist the veterinarians. A veterinary technician is indeed important for veterinarians to have so they could focus more on most complex task that a veterinary technician can’t do.

The main jobs of a veterinary technician which he/she usually learns from veterinary assistant schools include the following:

Venipuncture – This process is usually done by a veterinary technician to animals that needed to be cured. A venipuncture process involves collecting blood in order to diagnose its disease or sickness.

Radiographs – A veterinary technician is also in charge of doing x-rays for pets and animals taken to their clinics.

Tasks assigned by veterinarian in different laboratory procedures – A veterinarian usually assigned a task to a veterinary technician in some clinical laboratory works that include the following: hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, biochemistry, serology and microbiology.

Serves as the animal anesthesiologist – A veterinary technologist also serves as the animal anesthesiologist as he’s responsible in giving and maintaining anesthesia to an animal through the veterinarian’s prescription and guidance.

Keep track of the animal’s medication – A veterinary technician is also responsible in keeping track and monitoring of the animal’s medication given by a veterinarian.

Assist the veterinarian throughout a surgical procedure – It is also included in his job to assist a veterinarian in performing a surgical procedure to animals.

A veterinary technologist’s job is somehow the same with nurses where they assist doctors. Other jobs and tasks that a veterinary technologist are expected to do is collecting urine, performing skin scrapings, help in diagnosing the animal’s disease, dressing animal wounds, cleaning teeth and applying splints and other device for protection on animals.

The veterinarian should always make sure that his technician was trained and graduated from legit veterinary assistant schools in order to be assured that he can do the job quite well. A veterinary technologist plays an important role to the welfare of the animals which a veterinarian is taking care of. Choosing incompetent person would put the lives of many animals and the career of a veterinarian at stake.
