Beware Of Ethnocentrism
Example of Ethnocentrism
An example of ethnocentrism is the way westerners assume that those eating with chopsticks are silly and wrong. They think that using spoons or forks are the right tools or utensils for eating. When they see people eating with chopsticks, whether Asian or not, they think that they are doing it the wrong way. They only believe that their way of using spoons and forks is the right way, and that other people should follow their ways. If they don’t then they will be despised by the ethnocentric society.
Difference of Ethnocentrism and Racism
An ethnocentric society differs that from a racist society in a way. Racism is differentiated by having or expressing negative views about a particular group (Murphy & Choi 1997). This simply means that racists don’t like to be with people who are not the same race as they are (i.e. Westerners and Asians, or White Americans and Black Americans). While with ethnocentrism, although in some cases, this leads to racists, but the main focus of an ethnocentric society is the culture of another group. But, there is still a chance that they will accept another group, provided that they follow to their own customs and culture (Jackson & Weidman 2004). Since the ethnocentric society thinks that their culture is better than anyone else’s, they avoid those who believe the other way around. Racists, no matter if a group follows in with their customs and culture, still will not accept them and take them as different people. They still will stick to the fact that they are different from them. Which is why in some places, other races are being discriminated, whether at school, a town, work, or even stores. And the worst is, they even get treated very rudely and inappropriately, just because they are of a different race.
Ways Ethnocentrism Could Affect Quality, Accessibility and Appropriateness
Of Health Care Delivery
In the medical field, if ethnocentrism revolves or is present in a group, then providing medical attention to the patient can be very challenging. What if the situation is that the patient is very ill, or has a very serious sickness, and whoever is treating him is ethnocentric, if they find out that they do not have the same cultures or custom, there is a possibility that they will be leaving them and ignores to treat them? But then, patients shouldn’t be ignored of medical attention when they really need it, which is why those in the medical field are taught not to take sides and treat everyone equally. Everyone is entitled to be treated accordingly without being judged first, that is the work of those in the medical field. They shouldn’t restrict their selves from treating only those who believe the way they do.
