What does the words emergency lights mean to you?
Would you think of a red ring of death on your Xbox as emergency lights? Would you classify a flashing light on your car dashboard as emergency lights? Our perception of emergency differs depending on our priorities and on our personal thoughts and beliefs.
Some people would see a flashing light on a police car and not think emergency lights. It’s such a commonplace thing on our streets that often they fail to register with us. What a sad indictment on society that we would class a flashing light on a game console as emergency lights. The trouble is we do see flashing lights on our police vehicles, firefighter’s vehicles and our emergency medical vehicles and they are a daily if not hourly occurrence. When we see too much of something, we become almost immune to it and it barely registers on our personal radar.
Emergency lights are important, they protect, secure, warn, and inform. Emergency lights help in saving lives and making our streets and highways safer places for us all. Imagine a day when you don’t hear a siren or see any emergency lights. You would think something is drastically wrong probably. Just because something happens daily, doesn’t mean we should pay any less attention to it. Often we just muddle along in our own little private worlds and ignore all else around us.
Of course, we can’t take the troubles of our towns and cities on our shoulders but the least we can do is take note of what’s going on around us. A person being robbed on a street would think that what they really want to see more than anything is flashing emergency lights and the siren of a police car. We want our streets to be kept safe and we want to be able to walk them without undue worry. The emergency lights on our police, fire and medical first response vehicles do just that, they maintain safety and keep us more secure.
A world without emergency lights would be a fantastic place. It would mean no crime, no fire or hazard and no one being ill or attacked on our streets. Sadly, we don’t live in that kind of wonderful place. We live in the real world. The real world we inhabit is full of danger, hazard and incident, and those emergency lights, that are an all too common sight mean people our out there serving and protecting us. Therefore, pop your head out of your little world now and again, listen and look.
Yes, you will see emergency lights and hear sirens wail, but that is people doing a fantastic job of keeping us safe and well. It’s all to easy to think how sick we are of hearing police vehicles go racing down our streets or hear a fire engine in the distance. Without those people, our lives would not only be filled with hazard and danger, but simple situations would become life-threatening ones. Associate emergency lights with the correct situation, an actual, real, in your face emergency.
