The Best Mononucleosis Treatments
Mononucleosis is a viral disease that does not have a cure. Mononucleosis treatments are focused on treating the symptoms and alleviating discomfort. For the most part the disease is not serious and with the right care a person suffering from mononucleosis should recover without any complications. Most people are able to recover with simple home care.
However it is important to see a doctor to determine that the patient is indeed suffering from infectious mononucleosis and not a more serious disease. Some mononucleosis symptoms such as swollen lymph nodes, elevated white blood cells, skin rash, and headaches are similar to symptoms to more serious diseases. A simple blood test can confirm is a person is suffering from mononucleosis.
Prescribed Treatment
A severe sore throat is characteristic of mononucleosis and can cause a great deal of discomfort. A sore throat can also make it difficult to swallow, which in turn can cause dehydration if the patient is reluctant to drink fluids due to discomfort.
Your doctor should be contacted if you are experiencing this symptom. Salt water gargles are part of the mononucleosis treatments and can be helpful in alleviating the discomfort and reducing inflammation. It is important to drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Fruit juices should be avoided as this can make the throat worse.
Bed rest is extremely important to aid recovery. Getting plenty of sleep will also help the healing process. Avoid any strenuous activity, though it is unlikely that you will want to engage in strenuous activity. Patients suffering from mononucleosis typically feel extremely tired.
If a fever is present then taking Tylenol or ibuprofen is perfectly acceptable as part of mononucleosis treatments. Such medicines will also help to ease any pain felt due to swollen lymph nodes.
Unless you are suffering from strep throat at the same time as being infected with mononucleosis antibiotics are not prescribed. Antibiotics have no effect on mononucleosis and are not used as part of mononucleosis treatments.
In some patients it may become necessary to prescribe corticosteroids; this is only part of rare mononucleosis treatments. Corticosteroids are prescribed if a patient is experiencing an obstruction of the airways, a decrease in blood platelets, hemolytic anemia, hepatitis, or complications of the heart.
These complications are rarely present in a patient suffering from mononucleosis. Recovering from mononucleosis can be a frustrating experience as there is no specific drug that will cure the disease. The best course of action is to allow the disease to take its course.
