What kinds of things would you find on a Police Dash board?

We don’t give much thought to what may or may not be on a police dash. The kit and equipment they have on there and indeed elsewhere on the vehicle are crucial to those officers doing their job well and correctly.

The police dash on a vehicle is a wonder. There is a multitude of things that may be on the dashboard – from lighting to on-board computers. Other than the main things like dash lights or a camera, there are some weird and wonderful things on there that you may not think of. A police vehicle may have an in car digital video recorder to record their stops and prove in court if necessary that they were justified in pulling over someone and stopping them. Some police vehicles will have infrared license plate recognition units, which plug into a computer.

Of course, on a police dash you would find LED lighting to assist them when they have stopped someone. You may find radios, pagers or mobile phone holsters on a police dash. Basically, whatever equipment they need in a vehicle can be fitted to the dash in many instances. A police dash is full of cutting edge, high tech and high spec equipment and it all helps the officers be more efficient and effective. Anything that gives officers an edge over our criminal fraternity has got to be good.

If you look at crime statistics, most crimes are on an upward spiral. Crime rarely goes down and it is for this reason we need to equip our police with the absolute best up to the minute kit. Criminals don’t use out of date technology or equipment and neither should our police. Sometimes a police dash will look like something like a control panel for an interplanetary craft! The officers need this equipment so they can stay one step ahead of those that seek to harm our property, our businesses or us.

It’s true to say we expect our police to protect and serve us and indeed, they do endeavor to do this. We must arm our police with as much as we can to give them the upper hand and also the safety they need to do their job. Therefore, with police dash lights, equipment and even a simple holder for the paperwork they need, we are supplying them with the tools that enable them to do the job we expect of them. Some of the things on a police dash may seem a bit of kit to far, but the reality is they can never have enough kit and equipment.

Our police officers never do the same job each day. One day they could be chasing down a violent gun wearing felon and the next they could be directing traffic because lights are out. No two days are ever the same in an officer’s duty life and for that reason; their vehicles need to contain everything they need. The items on a police dash are the most accessible and visible, which is why it is a popular place to fix and keep items. Other areas of the vehicle are less accessible so the equipment they don’t need or use regularly will be used to store those items.
