Yes, With gall bladder, Ignorance Is Not Bliss
Usually the gall bladder functions to store the bile which is formed by the liver. It also functions to help the duodenum to digest and absorb fats. Stones formed in it are composed of the bile salts and cholesterol. The name indicates that it is a solid formation.
Previously, a typical patient of these stones used to be fat and forty. But now, people are prone to get these stones at a younger age. This may be because of the people’s inclination towards fast food. A key to the prone people includes four ‘F’s. They are Fat, Female, Fertile and Flatulent. Also the persons with some diseases are more prone to have the gall stones. These diseases include diabetes, sickle cell disease, pancreatic disease, cirrhosis, hyperparathyroidism, and Crohn’s disease.
Now, exactly what happens in gall stones? When you eat fats and the body tries to digest it, the gall bladder contracts to release the required amount of the bile in to the bile duct to help in the digestion. When this liquid bile hardens to form hard pieces, they are called the gall stones. These stones can block the bile duct or remain in the gall bladder. These stones are of two types; Cholesterol and the pigment stones.
According to the research in this area, the 80 to 90 percent of the stones are made of cholesterol. These are also formed when the liver secretes the bile rich in cholesterol. This excess cholesterol in gall bladder or bile duct crystallizes to form the stones. These are cholesterol stones. They can also form when the gall bladder fails to empty completely at the time of digestion.
The reason why the pigment stones are formed is unsure yet. But it is found in persons with hereditary blood disorders and cirrhosis. Generally speaking, in all these diseases, too much of bilirubin is formed. Not only this; but these stones are also formed because of low amount of bile acids and bile lecithin.
The formation of gall stones cause symptoms of gall bladder attack. They include nausea and vomiting.
Obesity, more amount of estrogen at the time of pregnancy, cholesterol lowering drugs, rapid weight loss, fasting and diabetes are some of the other situations which can lead to gall stones. All these situations reduce the quantity of bile salts in the bile and therefore more quantity of cholesterol. They also decrease the capacity of the bladder to get emptied at the time of digestion.
Native Americans genetically, secret high levels of cholesterol in the bile. So they have high risk of producing gall stones.
