Another Round
The nominations for the 53rd Annual GRAMMY Awards have been announced lately on Wednesday night with the CBS special The Grammy Nominations Concert Live. On the stage with blue laser pen rays overhead, the American R&B singer Jaheim was nominated for three Grammy awards, including Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Album, and Best R&B Song. And she is set to be presented at the 53rd Grammy Awards in 2011, though he is not one of the regular guests at Grammy Awards under the rays from cheap laser pointers.
Performing under the homonymous name of Jaheim, Jaheim is known for his amazingly soulful baritone voice. He was signed by Naughty by Nature’s Kaygee to Divine Mill Records in 2000, and released his debut album Ghetto Love in 2001. His second effort, Still Ghetto, was released a year later, both achieving platinum success. Jaheim’s third album, Ghetto Classics, was released on February 14, 2006, debuting at Number One on the Billboard 200, and selling over 153,000 copies in its first week.
Another Round is Jaheim’s fifth studio album, released on February 9, 2010. It’s also Jaheim’s second album with Atlantic Records. I remember I first found this album when browsing online to buy red laser pens. When I opened a website of a Wholesale online shop, the single “Ain’t Leavin Without You” came up, and I was attracted by Jaheim’s soulful baritone voice immediately. I booked the CD with a laser pen. Since receiving the CD from mailman, I had played it over and over again for thousands of times. Without a doubt, this is the most amazing voice I’ve heard in my lifetime.
There are two single from the album up to now. “Ain’t Leavin Without You” is the first single from this album. It was released to radio on October 23, 2009. The song is currently number 16 in Billboard’s: Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. The remix features rapper Jadakiss. The music video for the remix was released on February 5, 2010. “Finding My Way Back” is the second single from this album, which was released on January 22, 2010. The music video for “Finding My Way Back” was released on April 30, 2010.
The album opens with the classic sounding single “Ain’t Leaving Without You,” which could’ve easily appeared on a 1980s soul album. With the first track on the album, Jaheim makes it clear that the track is true R&B and not ‘hip-hop’. On “Finding My Way Back”, the singer continues in an urban direction, but doesn’t make any concessions to hip-hop, save for his rhythmic singing. As beautiful and solid as “Ain’t Leaving Without You”, Jaheim once again bats a thousand. Vocally, he’s never sounded better. “Whoa” features and old-school, dusty hip-hop beat that is conservative, but perfect for Jaheim. Jaheim takes a victory lap on the exceptional “Till It Happens To You”, clearly one of the most soulful tracks of the album, in which a choir back up Jaheim’s uplifting vocals/lyrics. On the fine “Impossible,” Jaheim obviously lifts from Percy Sledge’s “When A Man Loves a Woman”. And “Her” sounds like it could’ve been a home on a Joe album or any adult-contemporary R&B singer.
For fans of true R&B, this is the album we have been waiting for from Jaheim. Here the album does find Jaheim extending his voice and crafting even more poignant performances. Thank You Jaheim for giving us music fans some grown folks music…there is still hope for true R&B.
