The term is used for the techniques employed by website owners and SEO companies to help a website become more visible in search engines.

Unfortunately online it isn’t as simple as “built it and they will come” approach, you have to carry out a series of elements to help your website get a premium positions in the search engine results pages (SERP’S) and maximise your websites performance. Below are just a few general best practice tips to help website owners carry out better on page optimisation for their web pages.

 1. Title Tag

The page title is one of the most important on page optimisation steps you can carry out. This should be unique on every page of your website and relate the page itself. So don’t put SEO Brighton in the title tag when the page is clearly about Football. The length of the text within the title tag should be no more the 65 characters (including spaces).

 2. Description Tag

You description tag isn’t use for to help rank your website but it is a great selling platform to engage and drive traffic to your website. Again content on each page should be unique and not more then 160 characters.

 3. H1 –H3 tags Keywords

H tags help search engines differentiate important content. H1 gets higher priority than H2 and so on. Place your pages main key phases in the H1 tag of the web page and only use one H1 tag per pages. Use the other tags to help separate content. You can have as many H2 and above tags as you like.

 4. URLS

The URL is the first thing a search engine can see for each and every page of your website, thus optimising it should be one of the most important tasks when starting to optimise your website for search engines. Search engine friendly URLs are highly recommended. Use the web pages main key phase in the URL. Try to avoid session ids or URL’s that are illogical as search engines don’t like them and people don’t remember them.

 5. Keyword Density

Content is king and always has been in SEO. It is important you have some textual content on a page. Its good and hightly recommended that you use your keywords within this content. Ideally you want to aim for a keyword density of around 2-5%. Oh and just in case you are are unsure keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword or phrase appears on a web page compared to the total number of words on the page.

 6. Avoiding duplication

In all the areas spoken about above and on your website in general all content should be unique to a specific page on your website. You should nto have any content that is duplicated on your website. Duplicate content is content on a website that either completely matches other content or is appreciably similar. If a website contains multiple pages with largely identical content it can be penalised by search engines which in turn would have a major effort on that websites ranking.
