3 basic tips to succeed in a Photography Contest

There are so many different types of photo contests out there; it is sometimes hard to decide which ones you want to invest your time into. Of course, the main goal is to have a good experience, so here are some things to consider when participating in a photo contest:

1. Rights to your photo: Make sure that you own all the right to your photo. Contests will never award a photographer who is submitting a photo that does not belong to him/her. The prize it is biggest incentive to participate in a contest, so make sure the prize is something you truly want, and make sure that your photo is yours and you are not using someone else’s in order to improve your winning changes. The better the prize is, the happier you’ll feel when you win the photography contest.

Some of the best prizes offered are publication in magazines, cash, or products such as cameras or lenses.

2. Be creative and original: Many times you will see that photo contests have a bulk of photography that is plain and basic. It is important that you understand the theme of the contest so that you know how much you can do with the subject. You will be surprised how 80% of the photos submitted to a contest look similar and have very common ideas. The few that think outside the box, the few that dare to express their creativity and originality are the ones that usually win the contests. A winning photograph must have two aspects to it; it has to be a creative shot and it has to be well executed. Again, do not be afraid to try new things and experiment, and remember that the judges are looking at thousands of photographs, you need to show them something that will make them pause and look.

The most important part is that you join the photography contests that you feel more comfortable participating in.

3. Be proud: There are different types of contests; there are voting contests and judged contests. Some contests start by a judged phase and then go into a voting phase. Whatever the case is, remember that judges do not only look at the photograph itself, they also look at how others accept or deny the success of the shot. What we mean by this is that you should be proud and share your contest entry with people that you know will support you. If you joined a voting contest, share your entry using all the tools that you have; email, twitter, facebook, bookmarks, etc. The more views and voted the photo gets the more chances it will be selected as a winner. Make sure to share your photo with friends and family to get more votes and a better chance to win the photo contests.

It isn’t difficult to come across a photo contest that appeals to you. I would recommend entering many contests because there is always a chance of winning. And even if you don’t win, you still get feedback from other fellow photographers.

There are many good sites that host many photo contests. The good sites makes them stand out is that they have many different themes for their photo contests so you can pick which theme you like the most and enter it. Also, they offer a variety of prizes that appeal to everyone such as being published in a book, cameras or cash.
