Romantic period

English Romanticism is generally said to have begun in 1978 with the publication of Wordsworth and Coleridge’s lyrical Ballads and to have ended in 1832 with Sir Walter Scott’s death and the passage of the first Reform Bill in the parliament. It is a special literature period, just like a mini laser pointer with unique appearance and delicate laser.

If you would like to handle the sprit nature of this Romantic period, definitely you should know about following things:

The literary form which is fully developed and the most flourishing during the Romantic Period is poetry.
William Hazlitt is a great critic on Shakespeare, Elizabethan drama, and English poetry.
The two major novelists of the Romantic period are Jane Austen and Walter Scott. The major theme of Austen’s novels is love and marriage toward which she holds on a practical idealism- love should be judged by reason and disciplined by self-control.

Okay, here I will stop talking about the characters of Romantic period but paying more attention on the hot figures at that time , let us list the most prominent Renaissance writers , they are William Blake, William Wordsworth and Coleridge , Shelley , Keats and Jane Austin.

William Blake:

In William Blake”Tiger, Tiger”, William Blake expresses his perception of the “fearful symmetry”of the big cat. The phrase “fearful symmetry”suggests the harmony of the two opposite aspects of God’s creation.

Childhood is central to Blake’s concern in the Songs of Innocence and Song of Experience, and this concern gives the two books a strong social and historical reference. Blake’s Marriage of Heaven and Hell marks his poetry enters into maturity. The poems such as The chimney sweeper are found in both Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience by William Blake.

William Wordsworth and Coleridge:

The poet Robert Southey, Wordsworth as well as Coleridge lived nearby and the three men became known as the Lake Poets. Speaking of the characters in William Wordsworth’s working, according to the subjects, Wordsworth’s short poem can be classified into two groups: poems about nature and poems about human life. William Wordsworth thinks that common life is the only subject of literary interests; the joy and sorrow of common people are his main theme. We can say that, Wordsworth, the romantic poet, advocated the expression of the spontaneous overflow of powerful felling, it can be seen from his poetry, I wondered Lonely as a cloud, also, the poet express his love for the daffodils.

It seems like that romantic style always touch the deep bottom of writer’s heart shining the brilliant laser torch flashlight to the readers, even the most power laser pointer not yet to produce such a mighty influence on the soul of human being, but the classic Romantic period literature can achieve it! We even could find some common points from different Romantic writers, just like Coleridge and Wordswoods. Sharing the same writing style they published a joint volume of poetry, Lyrical Ballads, which became a landmark in not only romantic period but also throughout the history in English literature. Both of them are a great master who insists their thought on the writing and never try to Wholesale their viewpoint to the readers, in a sense, their passionate and rigorous artistic style really worth the contemporary writer studying for.
