Movie Review: High School Musical

It’s odd to discover the things that catch on from time to time. While many may have dismissed High School Musical part 1 when it first aired on television in 2006, there seemed to be definitely a dedicated crowd ready for it. Within the couple of years given that, the actual made for cable movie has created a couple of sequels, stocked Wal-mart toy aisles with toys and carried a lot of hefty influence within the music recording industry. All that for just a movie that is refreshing and entertaining yet definately not anything all of the hype warrants – except if you are a 12 year old madly in love with Zac Effron.

Troy (Effron) is a hunky super star belonging to the East High Wildcats basketball team. A leader on and off the court, Troy is a proverbial jock and the centerpiece of the proud school. His love for his game is definitely challenged soon after he tries out for the school play and, big surprise, carries a fantastic voice to go with his gold shot. Toss in the pretty new girl Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens) and you’ve acquired a complex yet completely innocent school romance.

Much of the story orbits around Troy’s effort to appease everyone around himself as he lives up to his jock image, all the while seeking to be his very own human being as he understands that thing called performing. Gabriella’s along for the trip, encouraging Troy to be him self and also rival little princess Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) is there to try and do whatever she may to make that golden-voiced jock her poodle chauffeur and boy toy.

High School Musical part 1 thrives at being squeaky clean fun, similar to the Bollywood musicals of India in which the young man and girl love pursuits sing through the streets but never seem to be connected at the mouth. There’s plenty of hand holding, serenades and romantic pleasures but nary a kiss.

For those not used to the traditional music structure, High School Musical part 1 may seem slightly jarring because the singing parts appear out of nowhere. Framing the story around a school production enables the story to include most of these figures directly into the plot. However some of the greatest tracks come out of nowhere, putting everything on temporary stop and opening up to the viewer and providing a number of nifty choreography along the way. All round High School Musical part 1 is a superb musical to view with the kids.
