Why You Should Consider a Concrete Overlay for Your House

When one thinks of concrete, they typically imagine a drab, gray floor. Warehouse stores, especially, are infamous for highlighting this stereotype and use it intentionally to imply a level of cost cutting by not putting down linoleum or other type of flooring.

On that same note, a concrete is a cost effective way to get an attractive floor in any establishment. Concrete overlays are becoming a more viable option in the home. The results will astound you and the cost of an engineered layer of concrete is similar to the price of tile.

Many homes that belong to millionaires have marble flooring in at least part of their homes. This is a beautiful option but incredibly expensive; adding an air of opulence to the home. There are companies that make concrete and polymer resin mixtures that mimic marble at a price point that the average consumer can handle.

These companies use the polymer to help bind the overlay to the existing concrete as well as to change the properties of the concrete; allowing it to be more flexible so it does not crack with temperature and humidity changes in the home. It also allows the concrete to take on the color and shimmer of good quality marble.

These overlays can be laid in various thicknesses, from a thin credit card width overlay to several inches thick, depending on the application. The concrete and polymer mixture stick incredibly well to the existing slab and are incredibly durable.

The reality is, even the floor at the warehouse store has a concrete overlay on top of the slab. That is what gives the concrete the shine that it has. Those floors stand up to years of abuse without any signs of wear. The overlay is also resistant to most chemicals, salt and UV exposure, making it perfect for even outdoor applications.

A new trend for the modern home is to use concrete and a concrete overlay to build up counters. Because of concrete?s inherent strength and the overlay’s durability and ability to mimics the properties of other materials, it makes for an incredibly durable countertop that can look like anything.

There are some homeowners who stain the concrete because they like the concrete look; however, others will use an overlay to get that beautiful marble or granite look. While both granite and marble make for great countertops, neither offers the durability and strength of concrete. Finally, when compared to granite and marble countertops, concrete is more resistant to odors and stains.
