Light Bars – saving lives and keeping emergency personnel safe
You probably aren’t even aware of what light bars are? They sound like some kind of lighter chocolate bar perhaps or a long pole like light. Essentially light bars are the emergency hazard warning on first response vehicles. The light bars are likely to be the most vital piece of kit on an emergency vehicle
Poor lighting, atrocious weather conditions and general apathy of road users, have our first response personnel at a disadvantage. The job of emergency response personnel is dangerous and made more so by the hazards they face responding to an emergency call. Speeding along the highway among traffic is not for the faint hearted. Yet our first responders do this every day of their working lives. The light bars they have on their vehicles serve as a ‘heads up’ to us. They inform us there is an emergency close by that they have to get too quickly.
It might seem to you that all we ever see on a daily basis is flashing light bars and we hear the sirens along with them. It’s true, we do see them, but that is a testament to how hard our emergency responders work and how many emergency calls they have to attend. Their job is difficult enough without road users ignoring the fact they wish to pass, and they have to slow down. A few minutes may not seem like a long time but it can mean the difference between life and death if an emergency medical team gets to someone on time.
Spare a thought for the police or fire officer, racing to a scene, trying to get through heavy traffic where people either can’t or worse still, won’t move out of their path. In many states ignoring the vehicle trying to pass with siren and flashing light bars, will get you a hefty fine and points on your license. If this did happen to you, I’d like to bet you would be more responsive the next time you find yourself in such a situation. The flashing light bars are there for a very good reason, they are a warning that they need to pass or that you need to slow down and pass them safely.
It’s a sad indictment of our society that we do hear sirens and see flashing light bars daily. Sometimes it’s crime, other times it’s accidents and other times it’s fire or someone taken very ill. When you consider how many calls our emergency service personnel have to respond to daily it’s no wonder we see the flashing light bars with seemingly regular monotony. What the sight of flashing light bars should be is a comfort and a reassurance. The first thing you would want to see if we were caught up in an emergency, is some form of flashing light bars as it would mean help is indeed on the way.
Emergency vehicles do many different things and have a variety of different equipment on them depending on the service they are providing. The single most important piece of kit they have is the light bars and sirens. Without these they would be invisible on our highways and streets. High visibility maintains safety and without it the dangers would be too large to contemplate. Life saving light bars are essential to keep our emergency response personnel safe and secure
