J.J. Abrams certainly knows how to open a series with a bang. Both Alias and Lost plunged viewers immediately into vast, labyrinthine worlds driven by smart and resourceful protagonists. While the content is mostly recycled classic television, the Abrams formula shifts traditional storytelling into hyperdrive. This has largely been the key to his success; he doesn’t toss the storytelling baby out with the bathwater in order to appeal to modern audiences.
However, Abrams’s new spy show can’t help but draw comparisons with his old one, Alias, and this puts it at a real disadvantage. No matter what you may have thought of the series by the end, the Alias pilot was one of the best ever made and could easily stand alone as a self-contained piece of dramatic entertainment. It told a complete story that established the premise, motivated the characters, and suggested a panoply of mysteries and enigmas to come. The premiere of Undercovers is a competent start, but nothing more.
What’s missing is a stronger supporting cast and the right narrative vehicle for their adventures. Besides the leads, all of the characters are thinly drawn and generic (there’s even the standard nerdy tech guy tossed in for comic relief), and the spy plot is almost as campy as a rerun of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Done with more finesse, the show could still slyly keep its tongue in cheek without sacrificing suspense and danger.
Which brings us to “Undercovers,” quite possibly one of the best meldings of the two sides of Abrams thus far: the action-adventure guy and the seriously modern romantic. Samantha (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) and Steven (Boris Kodjoe) Bloom are a couple of married former CIA spies who retired five years ago and now own a catering business in Los Angeles. It’s described as “small” but judging from their work and home environments and that cute little roadster Steven is driving, a comfortable living is coming from somewhere.
You may also have noticed that the fun espionage-romantic-dramedy in question wasn’t “Chuck.” While “Chuck” maintained its status as NBC’s largely forgotten little-engine-that-barely-could, chugging along with fan and critical adulation, very little audience to speak of and only sporadic promotion, NBC’s new series “Undercovers” premieres on Wednesday (Sept. 22) accompanied by a mammoth marketing wave.
For the record: I don’t begrudge NBC prioritizing “Undercovers” over “Chuck.” The network gave “Chuck” a really big push last winter when it returned and the long-term impact was negligible. I’m happy to have “Chuck” back for as long as we have it back and I know that when it comes to marketing, “shiny and new” trumps “settled and familiar.” It has to. Still, I get bogged down in the sense, as I see it, that “Undercovers” is basically a slicker, more expensive, less geeky (less enjoyable) version of “Chuck,” a show that NBC has already struggled to support for four years. The big difference is that NBC is trying to hang “Undercovers” on the hook of J.J. Abrams’ name, ignoring that fans are smart enough by now to predict Abrams’ very limited involvement going forward and ignoring that Abrams’ name hasn’t exactly been a gateway to TV hit status in recent years.
Of course, when an old friend goes missing and the CIA comes knocking for the Blooms’ help in finding him, they can’t resist the dangerous call. And as we all know, there’s no such thing as “one last mission.” The most noteworthy thing about having a primetime drama with African-American leads that is not a “black” show is that it’s so unremarkable. Abrams’ casts have always been diverse without it being forced or fake. Kodjoe and Mbatha-Raw are engaging, charming leads and a perfectly believable married couple who love each other and still kind of miss playing a fun spy game every now and again. Period.
