Public Speaking – How to Communicate Effectively

Public speaking or speaking publicly in front of a group of people is a very scary thing to do. In fact, most people fear public speaking. According to one survey, a lot of people even feel more fearful with public speaking when compared to death.

However, speaking in front of an audience is just a matter of practising and getting used to. The more you do it the more comfortable you will feel and your fear will disappear. But most people will feel very nervous and uncomfortable when they have to speak in front of a group of people for the very first time.

In fact, speaking in front of an audience is one of the most fundamental skill in effective communication. If you can stand in front of a group of people and communicate in a way that people can understand you, then you know that you are communicating effectively.

Effective communication is important in almost every aspect of our life; no matter how old we are or what kind of job we have, we simply cannot function properly if we cannot communicate clearly and effectively with others.

Most people are terrified when asked to speak in front of a group of people because they are afraid of making mistakes and being ridiculed by others. Another reason is because they are lack of self confidence.

The only solution to overcome your self confidence is to be prepared. If you are asked to speak on a particular subject, the first thing you must do is to make sure that you know the subject well. If you don’t know the subject, you need to ask for more time to do some research and equip yourself with the knowledge about the subject. It will be impossible to feel or act confident if you know nothing about the subject you are going to talk about.

The second thing you can do to overcome self confidence issue is to tell yourself that you have the capability just like the others. The only thing you need to do is to bring it out inside you. Do not undermine your self-worth and think that you can never be as good as others. Cut yourself some slack and have some faith. The moment you start to believe that you can do just as well as the others, you will be surprised at the outcome.

Remember that even the most confident people in the world do feel a bit nervous when they speak in front of a group of people. No matter how many thousands times they have done it, they still will feel some nervousness in them. This is not a bad thing, this is normal as a human. In fact, a bit of nerve is required to help pump up our motivation and get us going. This can help us to propel and do better.

Another thing is preparation, I don’t care how confident you are but if you don’t prepare well, you will flop. So confidence itself is not enough, you must also prepare your speech well so that people can follow and understand what you are saying. Now, that is the formula of effective communication.
