The Light bar LED is the most distinctive feature on an emergency vehicle

They are bright, in your face and hard to miss. They inform, they warn and they also maintain safety. A single Light bar LED on a vehicle can provide so much for that vehicle. How has emergency vehicle lighting evolved?

Emergency vehicles such as police automobiles were just standard model vehicles in the past. They were no different in look and fittings to the vehicles you or I could buy. Therefore, they did not stand out and would be treat exactly the same as any vehicle out there. In the 19 th Century, police started to use vehicles and they had to have a way to make them stand out and be noticed. First of all, they were marked out by different paint colors and designs. Light bar LED units did not appear until much later to mark the vehicles as ‘special’.

The reason vehicles were introduced into the police department was to enable a single officer to cover a much wider area than a foot patrol could. The first kind of lighting would have been the single rotating strobe light, and we still recognize that today as something that denotes a police vehicle. Interestingly the single strobe light was so effective it is still used today and comes in Light bar LED units and as single beacons. With the addition of specific lights and a siren, the police vehicle was instantly recognizable and therefore afforded special treatment when seen out on the streets.

The addition of distinctive paintwork, sirens and lights was beginning to add instant distinguishing marks to a police vehicle as early as the 1920’s. The vehicles still had little in the way of specialist modifications, and were in fact still standard production line models. Of course, manufacturers cottoned on to the modifications the police departments themselves were carrying out to vehicles. Shortly after WWII, packages were being offered to police departments. It was at this time the equivalent of our modern Light bar LED was being implemented.

The car manufacturers took the most popular requested options that police departments asked for and offered them an integrated package for the vehicle with siren and lights. We would not have the Light bar LED options available today if manufacturers did not listen to what the police departments wanted. There are manufacturers and suppliers today who work closely with all emergency service providers to tailor the Light bar LED to specific requirements. A generic Light bar LED is okay, but a specific one is much better.

The lighting options for emergency vehicles today are vast. There are mini Light bar LED, which can be fitted anywhere on the vehicle. There are Light bar LED units, which can be visor, dash or grill mounted on the vehicle. Therefore, from the initial rudimentary lighting on emergency vehicles, we have bright, reliable and efficient lighting that our emergency service personnel can rely on. The Light bar LED instantly highlights that a vehicle is ‘special’ and is providing a life saving service to all of us.
