If for some strange reason every computer in the world should stop working right now. Do you have a clue as to what you would do? I bet that 100 percent of you would not have a clue. You couldn’t run your business. You wouldn’t even know who owed you how much money or even how much money you had. Many of us involved in the music industry world would not even be able to continue our craft because computers are the only way that anyone records music these days. People would actually have to go back to relying on tenacity and talent to get things accomplished. No, I am not saying that no one has talent these days. What I am saying and I don’t think anyone can argue. Is that as a society, we are too dependent on machines. In m music industry it has become the norm to let sub-par things slide because we can insert a plug in and fix it in the mix. And while that is true, I mean it used to take a singer singing ON KEY to actually get an on key performance. Today we set some parameters and run the vocal track through an Auto tune program and you have the perfect vocal in perfect pitch. Another tweak and you can have absolutely perfect five-part harmony out of that vocal. Technically superior recording with no soul in music industry and I am betting that the vocalist who ALWAYS has to rely on the program can’t even make it through a show and sound half way in pitch. I could name several singers that fall into that category but why? They know who they are. The point here is that if we got back to basics and then let the computers enhance an already fabulous performance, we would have perfection that would blow your socks off. As it stands today we have a bunch of lack lustier performers that are giving us a batch of lack lustier songs that all sound the same. Listen to Nashville cuts and you’ll see they are classic rock to the Tee. But listen deeper and you’ll find that almost every hit from the last two years has a banjo in there somewhere. Cookie Cutter. It worked for someone so everyone is doing it. Whatever happened to people striving to come up with their own formula that worked? Like him or not Phil Spectre was a genius and when you heard his wall of sound in music industry, you knew who produced it. Today it all sounds like the same computer generated noise to me.
