Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman

When you trying to compare the two great poets of American history, the natural thing that comes in our mind they are two different distinctive humans by the way of behaving to other people. The Whitman is a talkative man who is sociable to all the people. But as far as Emily concern she is very quiet about the way of behaving to other peoples. Of course her works speaks for herself.
Comparison in writing styles:
Whitman writing styles is very daring and the choice of words in his poem is free verse. For example in his poem “Song of Myself” the line ‘I am large, I contain multitudes’ tells the attitude of this great poet and he won’t care anything in the world. But in Emily’s work, she chooses the words with caution. For example in the poem “If you were coming in the fall” the line ‘It goads me, like the goblin bee that will not state its sting…’ shows how she carefully chosen the words with at most care and having clever in her writing.
Comparison in voice styles:
As far as the voice of the persons concerned they are extremely distinguishing in exposing their voices in their works. As we all know Whitman voice is very challenging to the peoples and have the great guts and command over his voice. But in contrary Emily’s voice is pleasing and has some great impact on the people. Emily’s works shows that she always looked the life in darker side for example the line ‘I never lost as much but twice’ shows how she worried about losing her father. But in Whitman work she praised the nature and tells the truth that everyone going to die in one day. That’s why he keeps on writing poems till his death. “Leaves of grass” is the last work is the poem that remains as the epic poem till now.
Comparison in literature styles:
Both Whitman and Emily have very good literature knowledge in them. Whitman literary style is the transcendentalist type said by the Ralph Waldo Emerson who appreciates after reading the first edition of the poem leaves of grass. In addition to the Romantic lines in his poem, he also conveyed the natural realism in his poems. In the poem ‘Leaves of Grass’ the lines “What is your money-making now? What can it do now? What is your respectability now?” showed the exact nature poet’s literature skills in the line of nature.
But in contrary to the Emily works she was greatly influenced by the writings of William Wordsworth and Ralph Waldo Emerson. As by natural she is a influenced writer not a instinctive writer. Her literary works however showed that she has immense potential and literary skills in her poems. For example the lines in the poem “If you were coming in the fall” the lines If I could see you in a year, I’d wind the months in balls, And put them each in separate drawers, Until their time befalls shows the how elegant she handles the loneliness in her mind and how she expressed in her writings
