Girard Perregaux surprised the world of watchmaking, having presented its Opera One Sapphire Dial watch, the first ever created. The timepiece boasts an absolutely innovative ultra-thin, high-contrast display, quipped with tourbillon and minute repeater complications.
This spectacular timekeeper is animated by the brand’s signature GP9899 hand-wound movement, which can be admired via the semi-transparent tinted sapphire dial. Operating at a frequent of 21,600 vibrations per hour and embellished with 37 diamonds, the stunningly complicated movement with a power reserve capability of 75 hours is definitely an innovative try of the illustrious brand in a new era of automatic movements.
Featuring an 18ct white gold case at a diameter of 40 mm, the tinted sapphire dial of the Girard-Perregaux watch proudly demonstrates a sunburst finish. Its rays are stretching from the tourbillon, which is positioned at 6 o’clock. The hammers, ticking the hours, are readable at 9 o’clock.
First manufactured to enhance the time readability in the dark, the chiming of the hours and minutes is considered as one of the most difficult technical feats of watchmaking machinery to reach. To add to its complexity, the Opera One frames a Westminster chime, which indicates the hours using four hammers to play a melody of four different notes.
