How to Approach a Woman – 4 Ways to Make it Work

Knowing how to approach a woman is important. Whether you want to get her phone number or just ask her to dance, how you approach her makes all the difference. There are several guides filled with tricks to help men approach women, but these are iffy at best. The methods contained in these guides are unlikely to work with every woman, which is exactly what they claim to do. If you really want to know how to approach a woman, you’re better off going back to these 4 basics than relying on trendy “pickup artist” (or PUA) methods.

How to Approach a Woman

1. Smile. Psychological studies have found that humans prefer to look at smiling faces. Not only will your face look more attractive to a woman if you’re smiling, it also makes her more likely to smile back. Smiling naturally makes people more happy and relaxed, which works in your favor. A woman is more likely to talk to you when she’s feeling good, and she’ll immediately associate you with those good feelings.

2. Greet her. Don’t make the mistake of walking up to a woman and opening with a pickup line. A simple “Hi” or “Hey” is all you need to say. After your greeting, you can move on to introducing yourself or starting a conversation. Being polite costs you nothing, but can help you look like a nice guy during your approach.

3. Hands off. Many men make the mistake of trying to touch a woman when they approach her. Not only does this make women uncomfortable, it also makes you seem creepy. You might think touching her shoulder or her hand is innocent enough, but it’s never appropriate to walk up and put your hands on a complete stranger.

4. Ask questions. Even the most beautiful women can feel shy or self-conscious, and may not know what to say when you approach them. To break the ice (and help you figure out whether she wants to talk to you or not), try opening a conversation with a question. This could be something simple, such as “How are you tonight?,” or “What’s your name?” Asking something specific to where you are or what you’re doing can also be a good ice breaker, such as asking what kind of dog she’s walking or whether she’s new in your building.

Don’t complicate things for yourself. Learning how to approach a woman relies on mastering just these few basics. When these things are done right, you won’t need those “advanced” PUA strategies to get a woman’s attention.
