The Chronograph features hours, minutes, seconds, date, day and chrono functions, a stainless steel case and antireflective sapphire crystals on both sides. The dial incorporates hour and minute hands, a small seconds subdial at the 9 o’clock position, and a day and date window at 3 o’clock. There is a 60-second counter from the center, a 30-minute counter at 12 o’clock and 12-hour counter at 6, as well as a tachometer for speed measuring. The Chronograph comes with a choice of stainless steel bracelet with folding clasp and two push pieces or a rubber strap with stainless steel folding clap and two push pieces. The All Dial retails for $1,495.
Mido demonstrates an impressive “reflection of time,” as well as a measurement and expression of the inspirations created by history. Mido translates from Spanish to “I measure.” What better way to measure time than with Mido’s All Dial Collection. laiming two of the most interesting features in Ctoday’s crowded arena of competing sports watches is Alpina’s new 18-karat gold Heritage chronograph. The first feature is an exceptional design element relating to one of the functions, an “escargot” tachymeter. The name refers to the swirling effect of the concentric circles that spiral out from the center of the dial. To measure the speed of, say, a race car, the center seconds hand is released at the starting point—the outer edge of the circle—and stopped when the vehicle passes the finishing point. The center seconds hand will then indicate the average speed per hour on the tachometer scale.
If you think that’s fun, check out the second unusual function. The Heritage Chronograph features a telemeter. This rare function is a device to measure the distance between you and a phenomenon that is both visible and audible, based on the scientific principle that light travels faster than sound. In simpler terms: Let’s say you’re James Bond heading across the ocean in a sailboat in pursuit of the bad guys. You notice an ominous flash of lightning, warning of an oncoming storm.
Just hit the button that activates the center seconds hand on your Alpina Heritage, and then hit it again when you hear the thunder. This amazing chronograph will instantly tell you how many kilometers you are away from the storm, and thus how long you’ve got to capture the bad guys and take over their much larger, sea-going vessel in order to reach safety.
The Heritage gold chronograph is a faithful reproduction of the original Alpina gold chronograph of the 1930s. The watch is slightly larger than the original, however, and the movement has obviously been updated. Based on an ETA ebauche, it was adjusted by Alpina to create the AL-850 Caliber automatic movement. Its rotor is PVD-coated for sturdier protection, and the Alpina triangle trademark is applied to the center of the rotor on a separate stainless steel insert. Apart from normal timekeeping, it can measure an interval of time, from one-fifth of a second to thirty minutes. The amount of time that elapses is registered in minutes on the subdial at 3 o’clock, and the subdial at 9 measures seconds. The tachometer is calibrated to measure speeds of less than 60 kilometers (37 miles) per hour.
