Collars, Chokers, Princesses, Ropes, Matinees and Operas!
When was the last time you split open an oyster, half expecting to find a pearl inside? Not too long ago I think! Pearls have a unique charm and appeal of their own, like diamonds. Just as diamonds dazzle the eye with by breaking the light into a dance of rainbow colors, pearls sooth the mind and the soul with their soft and smooth presence. Pearls are most used in earrings and necklaces. But there is a special characteristic about perlenketten (pearl necklaces).
A unique set of vocabulary has been invented just to classify pearl necklaces according to their lengths. Most necklaces can be differentiated by its length or circumference, but pearl necklaces are classified on the basis of how they are worn on the neck and how low they hang on the neckline. The main types are:
- Collar: They are made up of multiple strands of small pearls or a single strand of bigger pearls. They do not hang down but sit snuggly on the throat. They can measure anywhere between 10 to 15 inches in length.
- Pearl Chokers: They rest at just the base of the neck and do not dangle too much. They can measure between 14 to 16 inches in length.
- Princess Length: These necklaces are often strands of pearls which come down and hang just below the collarbone. They measure 17 to 19 inches in length.
- Matinee Length: These hang just above the breasts. They measure between 20 to 25 inches in length.
- Opera Length: These hang further than matinee length necklaces. They almost reach the breastbone of the wearer. They can measure up to 26 to 35 inches in length.
- Pearl Rope: These are the longest variants. They hang lower than opera length necklaces and can measure a whopping above 45 inches in length!
Pearl jewelry can also be categorized on the basis of color of the pearl it imbibes. Saltwater pearls of white and black colors are a rage nowadays. Colors like purple, pink blue, green and champagne can also be found in pearls acquired from different parts of the world. These colors are extremely rare and valuable. Some colors are rarer than the others, thus to collect and create a necklace or an earring of matching or contrasting shades of the pearls can be a toil of many years!.Even pearls goes nice with halsketten aus silber (necklaces made of silver)
