The September 11Th
The September 11th, also referred to as 9/11, attacks on the United States of America will probably go down in history as the worst case ever in the word of terrorist action against a sovereign nation. The cause or probable cause of action that would explain the kind of atrocity witnessed in America during the 9/11 attacks, many thought, might have been a very convincing and valid reason since this was one attack that will be told through history.
This paper seeks to look into these attacks. The paper will address issues pertaining to the effects of the attacks, both short term and long term, and it will also try to address the question “What compelled the terrorists to attack”? The paper will then give an impartial conclusion on the attacks.
It is worth noting that the reason why plural is being used in this case, attacks, is because there were three separate attacks in the country. Although four planes had been hijacked with the intention of causing total damage, only three of the hijacked airlines were crashed in the designated targets. In the fourth airline, the passengers of the airline engaged in a fight with the hijackers and they were able to change the course of the airline. The other three airlines were crashed in the world trade centre, the two towers and the pentagon.
So, what are some of the results of the three separate attacks? The first result is definitely the loss of lives and property. It is estimated that over 2900 people died in the attacks, including the hijackers. Majority of the casualties, though, were civilians including nationals of over 90 different countries (Clarke; 2004). This is the worst effect of the terrorist attacks witnessed on that day. Although many died as a direct result of the attack, some also died as a result of other complications brought about by the attack. Some could not manage the trauma and therefore this led to other complications resulting to death. In a doctor’s examination, one of the deaths was ruled to be as a result of exposure to dust from the World Trade Center’s collapse leading to a lung disease.
Property worth millions of dollars was lost as a result of the attacks. Not only were the twin tower buildings and the pentagon destroyed and damaged respectively, other surrounding buildings were also damaged from the collapse of the twin towers. Communication was also tampered with in the cities as many of the communication equipment were at top of the twin towers.
The attacks had economic effects in the US and world economies. On the particular day, September 11th 2001, the global stock markets dropped sharply. This was due to the confusion and panic in the country that caused a major drop in the market. It also led to major loss of jobs and wages leading to an increase in the crime rate.
