Learn Spanish Early: Using Flashcards with Young Students
Rote memorization can be a valuable tool in K-4 grades, and it’s something children often do. In many subject matters, instructors recognize this and use flash cards to great effect. These flash cards assist the student in taking in the new information, but they also can provide a student with a sense of enjoyment.
There are many different ways to learn new material, but picking up a new language can be as difficult as it is complex. Flash cards allow children to interact with each other, as opposed to passively sitting in a classroom and listening to a teacher. It not only allows children to socialize, but it removes the attention-competiveness that often comes with whole-class instruction.
Flash cards also allow children to build associations between Spanish and their native language. The child can both compare and contrast words and concepts in both languages. To this regard, a flashcard for “river” gives the not only a picture, but spells out the word in Spanish and the child’s native language.
Both school faculty and parents can then transition the child away from their native language. This can be done with a flash card that only has a picture of a “sun” with its corresponding Spanish word. The word “transition” is key, as the child has to be moved gradually from one language to the next. Abrupt changes can be confusing and alarming to a child.
Once the child becomes familiar with flashcards, they can be guided through creating their own. This allows the child the chance to practice their handwriting in Spanish, but they learn to read the words too. Parents and teachers can take an active role in this. They can guide the child through the task of creating the cards, and they can also introduce new words at the same time.
Picking up a new langue can be difficult, but the process becomes fun, rewarding, and positive through the use of flashcards.
