Alternatives To Incarceration
Probation and parole are alternatives of to Incarceration and have contributed to the reduction of prison population in the United States of America. It’s said that since the introduction of parole violation prison life has changed. To begin with the two forms of supervision of minor criminal offences through the community have improved in reforming majority of American citizens. Probation is a period a criminal offender under supervision instead of being taken to jail. Probation requires the offender to report regularly to a probation officer for a specified period. Parole is a period after supervision of a criminal offence. At this period a person released form prison is put under supervision. The difference between supervision and parole is that under probation the person is not jailed and Parole the person is jailed. The terms and conditions of both are similar and they may be carried out by the same officer. These methods are very important because the cost of maintaining a person in prison is very high and most prisons are carrying persons beyond capacity.
Parole and Probation involves several methods all geared to make the victim ashamed of the wrong that they have committed. They are made to make it public what wrong they did to other people with the aim of making the feel guilty of the offence thus refrain from doing such an offence again.
It is an effective way to curb wrong doing in society. Unlike jailing that were confinement in nature, Parole and Probation is only lighter as the offender is ordered by court to do something that is considerate given the evidence provided to the court and the seriousness of the offence. The judges will give a sentence that is reasonable to the offender as much as possible. One of the advantages of Parole and Probation is that it deters the offender from repeating then offence in the future. Same as imprisonment and fines, Parole and Probation sets out to make them change their ways as they get to contribute by the public which will make them not repeat the crime they have committed again. The psychological aspect of working in public as those people who know you becoming aware of the offence that you have committed will hold you from committing the offence in the first place and will make you become cautious of your actions.
It will expose people and what they did, in order to protect their personal dignity they will not repeat the same. People are known to be protective of their self worth and will do anything to protect it. Through Parole and Probation one will be degraded as everyone gets to know of your actions which make you to cringe more inwards as you will make sure that the people who know of your misdeeds will not confront you and ask questions. A person will make sure that he will not make an offense because the more people know you, the more you will get ashamed of your actions thus being careful with your actions.
