Ellipticals vs Treadmills, what’s better?

Elliptical Trainers and Treadmills are good pieces of fitness equipment for getting in shape. Recently elliptical fitness machines have started to over shadow treadmills in popularity. As elliptical trainer information becomes more and more available to the general public this trend should continue. Protecting the bones, joints, and musles is one of the key benefits of elliptical trainers. Elliptical trainers are becoming more popular because older people find them beneficial. Ellipticals allow high intensity workouts in a safe, controlled manner.

For the longest time, treadmills have dominated floorspace in most gyms. I have been told by my doctor that I shouldn’t be used them due to knee and back issues that I have had during my life. I really enjoy my workouts being outdoors, however with the high temperatrues and humidity in the south, I have a hard time working out outside without air conditioning. Your foot can slide forward if your treadmill is not adjusted properly. Because of this, knee injuries can occur. If you are over 150 lbs. running on a treadmill can feel uncomfortable. My knees often ache after running a few miles on my treadmill. After talking to my local exercise shop owner he told me that most treadmills are incorrectly setup. This is due to the fact that having a treadmill professionally setup can cost hundreds of dollars. I have on more that one occasion tried more than one treadmill at our local fitness center before I found one that did not have a pronounced belt slip.

Knee issues are typically a thing of the past once using an elliptical. Belt slip problems are also a thing of the past with elliptical machines. Some people describe running on an elliptical trainer to something like running on air. Aerobic workouts can be achieved rather easily by using an elliptical. Most physical therapists utilize elliptical trainers to help their patients recover from their injuries. Personally, I have noticed that my knee that typically hurts when I run on a treadmill doesn’t hurt when I run on an elliptical. Elliptical machines allow you to adjust the elevation that you run at. This has a major benefit in that it will allow you to change the shape of the stroke to eliminate pain and discomfort during your exercise routine.
