That’s what NFL betting fanatics have to work with on Sunday, as the Miami Dolphins head into the winter wonderland at Gillette Stadium for a Week 17 tussle to conclude the regular season.
Henne’s Heartbreak in 2010 In terms of wins and losses, this game really does mean little to nothing to either side, as the only question is where the Dolphins are going to finish up in their positioning in the NFL Draft. However, the man that really has a lot to prove here is QB Chad Henne.

Henne knows that another bad performance will call for a lot of questions in this offseason, one that is destined to be a long one in Miami. A man like QB Jake Locker could be heading to South Beach in the NFL Draft if the Fins play their cards right, a move that they might be more inclined to make if Henne really can’t get anything going in the last month of the season. We do need to remember that Henne has battled some knee injuries at times this year, but he was as healthy as a horse for the final four games of the season. The Fins were right there in the race at 6-5, and wins in three of the four games probably would have at least made things remotely interesting in the push for the playoffs. Instead, Henne went into a shell, throwing for just 783 yards with four scores against six picks. He single handedly blew games against the Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions at home, both games of which really should have been won and won comfortably, and his offense only averaged 15.3 PPG in that stretch.
For the season, the Michigan product threw for 3,230 yards and 15 scores against 18 picks, numbers which don’t suggest that he can lead this team to the postseason any time soon.

There’s really not a lot to analyze here, as it is clear that the Pats, even if they do play at full strength on Sunday, won’t be playing with much in the way of motivation. Miami lost 41-14 at home against New England Patriots earlier this season in a comedy of errors on offense and special teams. The Fins have played well on the road this year, going 6-1, and their last trip to Gillette Stadium did result in a 22-21 upset. Still, we can’t back this team right now. Miami just lost to the Detroit Lions at home, for crying out loud! BetOnline is featuring a Week 17 betting line of New England minus 3 1/2, and we feel as though we have to lay the short spread, even if Hoyer takes every single snap in this game.

The Dolphins will head up to New England on Sunday to close out the season against the 13-2 Patriots needing a win to avoid a second consecutive sub .500 season. That’s what the Dolphins are playing for on Sunday, folks – to avoid a losing season. Of course, win or lose, most Dolphin fans would agree that this season has been “lost” for some time. I can’t argue that, either. But what I will say is that a win over the Patriots always feels good no matter the circumstances surrounding it. Other than that 2007 disaster, the Dolphins haven’t lost both games to the Patriots in a season since 2003. I could sit here and talk about how the Dolphins need to run the football to keep New England’s offense off of the field – and that would be accurate.

Now the Dolphins will have to go up against Patriots’ TE Rob Gronkowski – he of the 444 yards and nine touchdowns. They may also have to face TE Aaron Hernandez, who has accounted for 563 yards and six touchdowns. Running back Danny Woodhead, meanwhile, has 379 yards receiving himself and is averaging over 11 yards per reception – a high figure for a back. It’s going to be interesting to see what Mike Nolan comes up with to prevent New England from exploiting this favorable matchup.

That decision was second-guessed when Wes Welker – the 2009 NFL leader in receptions – suffered a major knee injury in the first quarter, causing him to miss a 33-14 loss to Baltimore in the wild-card round. Most of the intrigue Sunday will revolve around how Belichick chooses to play it this time after New England (13-2) clinched home-field advantage until the Super Bowl with last Sunday’s 34-3 win at Buffalo, the team’s seventh straight victory. “There’s a lot of things that would go into that conversation, a lot of things we’ll take into consideration,” Belichick said. “There’s some players individually whose situations are a little different than other guys. … We’ll do what’s best for the football team, both individually and collectively.” The coach may opt to give an extended rest to several rookies playing key roles, including tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, linebacker Jermaine Cunningham and Pro Bowl cornerback Devin McCourty. Hernandez and Cunningham didn’t play in Buffalo.
