A world renowned icon of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is Christ the Redeemer, or in Portuguese, Cristo Redentor. On 7 July 2007, the Christ the Redeemer statue been given a further recognition when it was called as 1 of the New Seven Wonders of the World by the Swiss-based organization, The New Open World Corporation. On February 10, 2007, the statue was struck by lightning during a violent thunder storm.
