High Performance Driving Events and Club Racing
One of the best ways to test your abilities and advance from the autoX scent is to get into HPDE’s or High Performance Driving Events. Anyone can go to these events for reasonable fees with any sound vehicle that is safe to drive on the street or track. The experience will not only make you a better and more aware driver but will increase your on track abilities. It doesn’t matter if you own a Honda, Mazda, Toyota, Ford, Kia, Hyundai, BMW, GM, Porsche or any other manufacturer you are welcome at these events. There are several clubs to join for this that specialize in certain brand names of autos if you want to join a specific group.
Driving events are an affordable way to get your food in the door to real racing and will give you a much greater respect for the guys that do this for a living, pushing the limits that we could all only dream about and be to scared to ever do ourselves. There will come a time when some people get bored with HPDE events and want to start competing with their fellow drivers, that’s when club racing becomes an option.
The two organizations that come to mind are SCCA and NASA for wheel to wheel racing. These organizations are broken into categories so the vehicle you have can compete with similar vehicles and they have very strict rules on what modifications you can make. This is when you and your vehicle become true racing enthusiasts and a circuit-racer because your car will then be equipped with full racing equipment as will yourself to legally be on the track.
For further information you can visit their websites or you can join a forum and talk with a community of experienced drivers willing and wanting to share their own build-outs, stories and experience.
