Are Surgical Technicians Being Replaced By Automated Technology?

While there are a number of responsibilities related to surgical technicians, such positions generally offer a great deal of job security. For, while such individuals are often in high demand at hospitals and medical centers around the world, the shortage of certified technicians continues to grow. However, if one is considering training for a job in the field, one may want to opt for becoming certified, as those who hold certification are often the most desirable when it comes to such jobs.

For, while it is expected that a great many openings may become available, those who have such credentials, along with experience and training are most likely going to fill the best of the best of such positions. Of course, while such training is often provided through a variety of community and four-year colleges, one can also at times find paid training through a variety of hospitals and medical centers. However, whether one attends such training through traditional means, or as part of an on the job training program, hospitals will still most likely remain the primary employer of such technically skilled technicians.

So, what exactly are the responsibilities of surgical technologists? When one is employed as a surgical technologist, often also referred to as scrubs, surgical or operating room technicians, one assist in different aspects of surgical procedures as directed by the head surgeon on staff. However, RNs and other hospital personnel can also have direction over such positions. As such, if one is considering a job as such a technician, one may want to assure that one can communicate clearly and follow instructions.

Although, while working under the direction of others, such individuals are still often considered an integral part of an operating room team. As such, one is a valued asset to such an institution, along with the anesthesiologists, RNs, LVNs and surgeons who are also considered part and parcel to such teamwork. As such, whether a technician provides pre-surgical support by setting up the proper instruments and equipment, or assist during actual surgery, such procedures are often quite essential to the success of both patient and surgeon.

Also, as such individuals often care for patients by cleansing and disinfecting incision sites for such procedures, one must have a great attitude and know how to effectively communicate where such patients are involved. For, if one misunderstands a patient request, or notification that a patient is in pain, such patients may experience more complications than otherwise. As such, if one desires to work in such a field, one needs to have the ability to listen and communicate effectively with both surgical staff and patients.

So, if one is looking into such a position as a career, one may want to consider that one must often lift a great deal of weight when it comes to the transference of such patients between tables. For, most often, one must move a patient a number of times before, during and after such procedures. Still, if one is capable of providing such movement, one can most often learn all the other traits necessary to become a great technician.

Also, while in surgery, such individuals provide support to surgical assistants and surgeons by passing instruments to such professionals when requested. In addition, these technologists often also help in the preparation, care and disposals of any specimens which are, or have been submitted to a laboratory for review. Of course, such individuals are also helpful at the end of such procedures as cleaning and restocking the operating room before arrival of the next surgical team is also an important aspect of such a position.

However, if one has certification as a technician or technologists, one can often also assist in more specialized areas. For example, such individuals often hold the position as the first surgical assistant, a position which is often vital to the success of overall surgical procedures. As such, it is also often these individuals who are given more responsibility such as being responsible for accurate blood flow while also authorized to stop or prevent a patient from losing too much blood by preventing any procedures which may result in a hemorrhage of such blood.

As such, if one is considering a career in the field of surgery, one may want to visit a local hospital and observe the many different aspects related to such surgical technicians. For, while there is a great deal of involvement with patients and surgeons, some tasks involved in such care, preparation and clean-up can often be difficult for some. As such, if after such a visit, one still believes a job as a technician is the right decision for the future, one may want to inquire about any local college or on the job training programs offered in the area.
