Always Getting in a Jam
I generally repel technology. It is in my genetics. I loose cell phones; I’ve even accidentally thrown one away before! I am okay with computers but that is because I use it for basic functions only. But the one thing I can never get to work right are paper rolls. It is ridiculous. Throughout college, I waited tables and my nemesis, besides all of the rude people, was the pos paper. I would go to print out a check or run a credit card, and so many times the lid on the pos paper machine would be up, the light would be blinking and it would be out of paper. Now, I understand that everyone gets busy but why did the paper rolls always seem to be empty when I needed them? It was crazy. On one occasion, I changed the pos paper, and went to reprint a check, and I somehow did not load it properly. It took me ten minutes to get it working correctly. Now, I know that in general, ten minutes does not seem too long but working in a restaurant on a Saturday night makes ten minutes seem like an hour. It was so frustrating. The thing that always happens to me with paper rolls is that they will jam. It is again one of those freaky things that only seems to occur when I am around but it consistently happens to me. One summer, I interned at a law firm and I often had to use the bond paper rolls. At least once a week, it would get jammed. Thankfully there was another intern there that was really nice and he would come and help me every time he heard the machine beep followed by a curse word from me. Part of my job was to print out contracts and other items using the bond paper rolls, so I am very glad my boss never knew of my struggles. I think she actually thought I was a whiz with the machine because if I was busy working on another project, she would try to use and would have the same problems. I do not know why I have such a hard time with paper rolls. Some community college or trade school should offer a tech savvy class in which they spend whole sections of the course on pos paper and complete a lot of exercises and practice sessions using bond paper rolls!
