Tramadol, a synthetic analgesic agent, acts as an inhibitor of neurotransmitter reuptaker. It is used to cope with prolonged pain symptoms. This medication has two complimentary mechanisms by which it works. It is highly effective as an analgesic and its efficacy is similar to morphine and can be used as its alternative in many cases.
Generally, this drug is well tolerated and causes very less side effects. Other analgesics have many side effects on the body, especially on the respiratory system, cardiovascular system and gastrointestinal tract. This means that Tramadol is safer than the rest and can be taken by people who have a weak heart. This drug is also safe for smokers and obese people. Other than its normal uses, Tramadol is also used for:
- Premature ejaculation
- Diabetic neuropathy
- Migraine headache
- Postherpetic neuralgia
- Restless legs syndrome
- Compulsive-obsessive disorder
- Opiate withdrawal management
Some side effects of this drug are nausea, sweating, drowsiness and vomiting. Some people who have used this drug experience seizures and convulsions. So, if you have a history of convulsions or seizures, you are likely to have seizures when using tramadol. If you are bothered by other side effects of this medication, such as slow heartbeat, heavy breathing, extreme weakness, clammy skin, coma and fainting, seek immediate medical attention.
How to use it?
Do not share this drug with anyone else. Ensure that you tell your doctor if this drug does not work well for you. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Cases where tramadol has impaired thinking and cognitive behavior, have also been reported.
If you are using this medication, do not drive or work at a place where you need to be alert. This medication is known to cause drowsiness and this may cause accidents. Do not stop using this medication all of a sudden or else you might experience strong withdrawal symptoms, which can be avoided if you follow a proper pattern of dosage. Do not crush or divide this tablet. And, do not inhale powder from a crushed tablet. NEVER use this medication through inhalation and injection.
Some less common side effects of using Tramadol are hallucinations, tremors and diarrhea. Talk to your doctor about the side effects you are experiencing while taking this drug.
Tramadol dosage
Usually, an initial dose of 25 mg is prescribed. In case this dose does not give satisfactory results, the dosage is increased to 100 mg per day in which a dose of 25 mg needs to be taken 4 times a day. This pain relief medication is used for people who need round the clock treatment for their pain. It is an effective medication for treatment of chronic pain.
Always consult a doctor before using this medication. Self medication can be dangerous. Also, you may need a dose adjustment/change, which only a doctor can help you out with. In cases of side effects, seek emergency medical help. Do not overdose this drug. Overdosing will only increase the risk of side effects.
