Even beginners to the industry who have an aptitude are finding it easy to climb career ladders as they scramble for positions just above them. With perseverance one can find themselves in a position.
Many countries are in the process of upgrading and installing necessary infrastructure to aid in the extraction of oil and gas. Countries like Australia, Kazakhstan and Nigeria have the biggest recruitment needs. At the moment there are massive recruitment drives to get engineers to work in these countries. There is a shortage of expertise in these countries and unemployment gaps are not being filled.
An advantage of working in the oil and gas industry is the prospect of offshore jobs. Offshore rigs are a plenty and offer big salaries for individuals who are willing to put up with the discomforts of working offshore. Working time normally revolves on a time on for time off basis meaning you would have 3 months on for one month off. This can be longer or shorter and will depend on the contract. Offshore safety is the biggest concern for oil and gas companies and without safety certificates you will not be allowed to work onboard any oil rig.
