Becoming the Top Search Results on Google

As of October 2010, Google has changed the way that its search results are shown on the main page. These changes are going to greatly affect the way you search for things on Google. To understand exactly how these changes have affected the results page you may want to open up a Google page and follow along with this article.

Open Google now and search for Florists Brisbane. You will see that a few things have changed and others have not. We will go over these changes and what they mean to you as a consumer and as a business owner.

The first thing you see when you search Florists Brisbane is a selection of 3 results highlighted in a purple/mauve background. These are Google Ad Words and these are advertising spots that are auctioned off by Google and is how they generate revenue. It is an auction so the results in this box can change periodically. Also you will see Google Ad Words to the far right below the map to the right. Google has chosen to place the ads in this spot for a reason. According to a study done on eye placement, the top left corner is the point on the screen that people are most drawn too and where the most clicks are going to occur.

Next you will see that the map that was mentioned in the previous paragraph has moved from just below the Ads section to the right of the ads. This is because Google Places has taken over the top positions in the search results. Google Places is the physical addresses of businesses and objects that are uploaded to Google and are indexed through keywords and content on the Google Places page itself. If you are a business owner it is extremely easy, and not to mention free, to set up a Google Places Page. First you will have set up a Google account which is free and will take approximately 3 to 4 minutes. Second run a search for Google Places and the page will be one of the first results. While signed in you can then set up your Google Places page and have it indexed by Google. All the important information is available here, contact information, directions, etc. Making a business easy to access online quickly was one of the major focuses for this change.

Now below the Google Places results you will notice that there are now only a few Search Engine Optimized results available on this page. This is because as you get farther down the screen, you are less likely to click on a link there according to the eye placement study that was done. If you are still looking at having your main site show up here as a top pick you can still do that, and all you have to do is search for Search Engine Optimize in Google and Google’s own manual will be available for you.

These are the three ways that you can now become a top search result on Google. The layout of the page is easier to navigate for users and better at directing customers to the right location for businesses. This was an overall good change for everyone.
