What to do and what not to do with Google Places

Lets talk about how you can claim your listing in Google places. First thing you will need to do is to conduct a simple Google search for ‘Google Places’. The search should then direct you to a page where you can sign in and claim your Google Places listing. Note  that the account you use to login to Google Places can never be transferred or altered in any way. So if you have already created a listing, you need to use that account as opposed to create a new one. In addition to this, you must remember your username and password as forgetting it will cause a few annoying issues with creating an additional account listing.

It is highly recommended that you create a Google Places Gmail account specifically dedicated to Google Places and not mixed with other listing or email addresses.

Once you have logged in or located your business, you need to fill in the various fields available to you. I suggest you fill out the Google Places information out completely and thoroughly. You should try and put as many logos, pictures and videos as you can so you set yourself apart from your competitors and other competing listings.

Another thing to note is that you will need to verify that the account is actually for you. You have the options of:

– Having a postcard send through to you with a PIN code
– They will ring the number in your listing and call through with the pin, so you will need to be ready
– They can SMS you the Pin – this is probably the easiest as it comes directly to you mobile and there is less confusion.

Verification is not difficult and neither is claiming your Google Places page. Ensure that you put as much information as you can, be clear with your categories, you services areas and continue to check the statistics to keep up to date on what’s going on with your Places listings
