Why Google Places?
I want to share with you some really exciting changes that Google are making.
If you do a search for a florist in your local area, you will now see the new Google places interfaces. Whether you like the new format or not, this is the way Google is heading with their local search listings. There is a map that you will see on the right hand corner. This map used to be in the main section on the left. With the new interface the map is now positioned on the right and will scroll with you when you move the page up or down.
Another change that you may notice is that the old sponsored links are now just called ads. Whether this was a result of better click through rates or an altogether different plan from Google, you will no longer see ‘sponsored links’.
Although Google has been rolling out different version of Google Places and testing different layouts and page structures for several months, the most notable concrete changes started to really come into effect on October 21, 2010
As a local business the good news is that most of the content on the front page can be taken control of at no cost. You can specify specific business information such as the areas you service, payments you accept, hours of operation and reviews from around the web.
Google places not only powers search engine positions but is also powering Google Map, Google earth and even Google mobile results so its importance cannot be underestimated.
With the current format as it stands, it is not really an option to claim your listing as it is a necessity.
