Chelsea had the good sense to change Aubree’s last name on the birth certificate and moved on from this dedicated sperm donor and has moved out of her parents’ home and into her own place with her daughter and her best friend. Like any mother, she wants to make the best of things and ensure that Aubree has two parents in her life who love her, but this season will show more drama with IBTOH and her family’s and friends’ increasingly vocal concerns about her banishing IBTOH from her life for her and Aubree’s sake. The season will also document Chelsea’s struggle to motivate herself to go back to school to earn her diploma online and pursue her dream of enrolling in beauty school.
This season will continue to document Jenelle’s struggle to balance motherhood with being a teenager, as shown in her episode of 16 and Pregnant. She is reluctant to put her young life on hold indefinitely and goes out with friends frequently, leaving her son Jace in the care of her mother, Barbara, with whom she has a troubled, rocky relationship. She ignores Barbara’s demands she stay home to be more of a mother to Jace and even her friends started to voice their own concerns with this. I’m going to go out on a limb here and note that when your teenage girlfriends tell you your not being enough of a mother, you’re probably doing something wrong. Barbara so strongly believes Jenelle isn’t a responsible enough mother that she sues Jenelle for custody of Jace. Jenelle, realizing she cannot possibly afford (in more ways than in the financial sense) to stand up to Barb in court, agrees to sign over temporary custody while she gets her life back on track. She enrolls in college classes, tries to support herself financially, and finds a new romance with some dude unfortunately named Keiffer. The season will show her battling Barbara to be allowed to spend time with her son and keep a roof over her head.
Kailyn is a sweet teenager and serious student who has had led a very troubled life. Her father left when she was a baby and she and her mom have struggled since. When her mother, Suzi, and Suzi’s boyfriend are forced to live in a hotel, Kailyn finds support in her boyfriend Jo and his family, who offer to take her in to live with them. Jo’s mom Janet becomes a second mother to Kailyn and all seems to have taken a path for the positive. Aaaaaaand then Kailyn got pregnant. She remains determined to make a life for herself through education, takes her SATs, graduated a semester early and intends to attend college to become a dental hygienist.
Leah and Corey started dating casually just after she ended a three-year relationship with another boy. A month later, she was pregnant. As if being a mother (a teenage mother, at that) isn’t hard enough, Leah discovers that she and Corey are having twins. Leah, a former cheerleader, takes a semester off from high school due to her pregnancy, but very quickly she finds that she desperately misses school, friends and being an ordinary teenager. While Corey works two jobs to take care of Leah and their growing family, Leah looks for an apartment for them while she is resting due to her high-risk pregnancy. In her episode of Teen Mom, Corey shows that he has accepted immediate responsibility and backs it up with actions, while Leah acts out because of the sacrifices she feels she has made.
Aliannah is developing at a much slower rate than her sister Aleeah and Leah reaches out to Corey. Because one of their girls is sick, they focus on getting back together and strengthening their turbulent relationship. The season will document their commitment to each other and their twins and will show them “moving fast,” with a proposal and wedding in the very near future.
