As weeks go by Henry is unable to find a job as a writer, mostly due to the lack of good material. He finally lands a job, when during his interview Ed interrupts with an irrational phone call that sparks the interest of the eccentric editor conducting the interview. Henry is ultimately hired, but is forced to continue living with Ed in order to be able to continue to write about his father’s unsolicited rants, hence the title “$#*! My Dad Says”.
The title of the broadcast series has been modified from the source material in order to comply with Federal Communications Commission regulations on the use of profane language during prime time. The profanity will also be toned down and modified from Halpern’s Twitter feeds. On May 19, 2010, CBS announced the show’s official name and 8:30 pm time slot at its upfront presentation of the fall 2010 schedule. Addressing reporters’ concerns regarding the title, the network assured them that the expletive would not be used in promos. Soon thereafter, the Parents Television Council announced that it was protesting the title because it alluded to an obscenity. The PTC is threatening CBS with broadcast license challenges for any affiliate airing the show or its promos before 10 pm.
Though it won a People’s Choice Award this past week as favorite new comedy, the return of BLEEP MY DAD SAYS with a new episode, “Goodson Goes Deep,” found the program still suffering from mixed timing and beats and frankly, not enough gut-bucket yuks (none really, this time out).
Meanwhile, the subplot, which was more so half-plot, now finds Vince and Bonnie also living at Ed’s and trying to have a baby. When he send them to the garage – dirty, cluttered, messy – it made for a few funny lines, but it was still second-rate comedy. The sentimental moments when Vince finds childhood toys in a box was kind of sweet and funny too with a dirty talking glove puppet.
Based on the popular twitter account “Shit My Dad Says”, Bleep My Dad says is a comedy following the life of Henry Bennett as he has to deal with his family following being released from his job with especially his father being an eccentric character. Can William Shatner and the rest of the crew crank out another good episode? To find out, tune in to CBS today at 20:30 to watch Bleep My Dad Says season 1 episode 13 ‘The Better Father’.
Carl asked Henry. Clearly not everything. “I didn’t know you had a son,” he said to Ed, before asking about Root Beer, the dog Vince (Ed’s other son) and his wife. Carl turned out not to be the friend Ed thought he was either. He’d ordered a ball for Ed, but when he found out it was worth twice what Ed was going to pay, he went and sold it to someone else for even more than that.
Tonight, the long awaited release of William Shatner’s brand new TV sitcom “$#*! My Dad Says” (spoken as “Bleep My Dad Says”) is upon us all. For those who aren’t in the know, amongst The Shat’s many projects has been this new sitcom in which he plays a 72-year-old father who happens to be very outspoken. CBS describes Shatner’s character, Ed Goodson as “a forthright and opinionated dad who relishes expressing his unsolicited and often wildly politically incorrect observations to anyone within earshot.” You can read CBS’s full synopsis here.
29 year-old Justin Halpern created an account called “Shit My Dad Says” on Twitter and sent out tweets of particularly enlightening phrases from his pithy 74 year-old dad. At this moment, Justin (and his father – he also deserves a portion of the credit) has more than 1,339,000 followers on Twitter. In fact, the tweets were compiled and turned into a book, giving the people who did “Stuff White People Like” a real run for their money.
This morning, the Wall Street Journal pointed out the difficulty CBS had with choosing a title for the show, seeing as the title’s first word is as television unfriendly as Janet Jackson. To get around the issue, executives opted to use asterisks and some “shift + number” characters. However, we’re supposed to call it “Bleep,” as in “I couldn’t watch Bleep My Dad Says because my dog died last night.” It doesn’t make sense to say it that way, you’re entirely right.
