Need Help Picking a Sportsbook?
If you’re new to the sports betting world, it could be very intimidating on trying to understand the lingo and sports betting terms of all of this sports betting stuff! Trust me, when I first started, it took me about 3 to 6 months to get a grasp on how the lines work.
I get tons of calls on what does a minus in front of -140 mean and what does over under stand for? I understand sports, but I don’t get the numbers and terms and all that other betting stuff beside the team sports matchups. I need help!
Granted, I’ve been betting on sports since I’ve been 18, but there’s a whole new world out there now with the use of the internet and going to the race track at Rideau Carleton Raceway (Ottawa) and Connaught Park in Aylmer is not like stepping up to an online sportsbook menu and trying to dissect what all those terms mean.
For instance, the most common question I get from people who call my office is what does the minus mean in front of the Tennessee -3.0 vs. Buffalo +3.0 game? What does the 34.5 mean beside the o/u symbol? What’s a teaser? What’s a parlay?
- What does (SU) mean in your write up? SU means straight up
- What does (ATS) mean in your write up? ATS means “Against the spread”
- What does (O/U) stand for? O/U means OVER and UNDER
That’s just the basic stuff, the toughest ones are how do the sportsbook calculate the parlay odds, teaser odds, and who sets the line? Isn’t it amazing how close the linemakers who set the odds can fall right on the point spread numbers? Experience, algorithm software and having the gift all play a major role into making a number.
I can sit here on Monday morning, look at the weekly CFL games and my numbers have always been off my 0.5 or 1 point. Sports handicappers who do their homework and study the lines, will have the talent of calling the line.
However, with NFL Preseason coming, one of the most important factors new sports bettors must make is choosing the right online sportsbook, because one bad experience with a crap book and you can have a bad experience and you will never come back to betting on sports online ever again!
