Limewire is no more….

Its official, Limewire is dead!
In October 2010 the federal court in New York issued a permanent injunction against Limewire. It determined that the site caused a “massive scale of infringement” by allowing copyrighted files to be shared by its members, believed to be over 50 million string.
Limewire was founded in 2000 for the purpose of allowing the searching and sharing of material. The decision came after a four year court case between Limewire and the Recording Industry Association O America, the body that represents most of the world’s largest record labels. In January 2011 the trial will continue to decide the amount of damages that will be awarded to the record companies in order to compensate them for the loss of revenue as a result of downloads from Limewire.
This case follows the high profile case won against Napster who had to change their format whereby users now have to pay for any songs they download from the site. The industry has now set a precedent and more cases are bound to follow. As yet the courts (in the main) are not prosecuting individual users for downloading pirated copyrighted material. Having said that, in 2007 a woman was sued for $220,000 for downloading 1700 songs from Kaaza!
So what does this mean for the user? There now appears to be a lack of places to download music from for an affordable fee. Some sites similar to Limewire still exist, an example is Bearshare. However, it is recommended you avoid sites like this, many of the files are infected with viruses and if you download one of these it can prove to be a very expensive mistake. Just put “bearshare virus” into google and see what I mean, I just tried it and got 517,000 results.
To summarise, it’s just not worth trying to get your music for free, you’ll either get sued one day or get a virus!
