January is not all doom and gloom

The month of January has the highest suicide rates, financial strain, Christmas stress and the horrible weather take the strain on a lot, more so on some than others. If you are a VW Polo or VW Golf BlueMotion driver then this January isn’t too bad.

The Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion and Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion models have been exempt from road tax since launch but, as of this month, January 2011 they are also exempt from the London Congestion Charge.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson and his panel of experts have revised the criteria for exemption from the £10 daily charge, which is payable upon entering the central London area between peak times. Under the new rules governing the London Congestion Charge, vehicles emitting less than 100 g/km of CO2 are no longer required to pay the daily charge to enter the Congestion Charge Zone. Which means the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion with only 91 g/km of CO2 and Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion with just 99 g/km CO2 both fit this criterion.

People travelling in and out of London on a daily basis can potentially save over £2,500 if they drive an exempt model. Even if you drive a used Volkswagen in Swansea, the BlueMotion models can save you a mint on fuel. The Golf can do 62.8 MPG on a combined cycle and the Polo can do 74.3 MPG, that’s on top of the savings from not having to pay Road Tax.

The main features of the BlueMotion models are optimised aerodynamics, low rolling resistance tyres, Start/Stop, battery regeneration and longer gearing. Though highly efficient these models still look and feel very much like a VW, both the Polo and Golf BlueMotion models come as standard with alloy wheels, air conditioning, a CD/stereo system, electric windows, Hydraulic Brake Assist and ABS as well as driver, passenger, side and curtain airbags.
